Transformation is the Goal of the Entrepreneurial Mindset
The dictionary definition of “transformation” references “a complete change so that the person or thing is improved.” In other words, our transformation means we does not stay the same—we are in a constant push for continuous improvement.
A cursory review of high science education will remind us that our bodies are made up of cells and those cells are in a constant state of renewal—we’ve probably even heard it said that our entire body is made new every ten years through cell regeneration (science teachers, I know I am over-simplifying this). While this process happens without our attention or care, it pales in comparison to the transformation that is possible when we focus on our mindset.
Romans 12:2 states, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” This verse juxtaposes the word “conform” with the word “transformed” suggesting that our natural default position is to conform, or give in to the path of least resistance that society provides, but we are called to overcome this tendency by focusing intently on the role of transformation. And this transformation happens first in our mind—we are called to “renew” it.
So how does one “renew” their mind? Well, the word suggests a “making new again” which is only possible when we embrace a mindset of improvement or, what Carol Dweck calls, a “growth mindset.” This mindset, when directed alongside our vision, mission, and values, becomes a powerful driver of directional growth in our lives. And this growth is what will lead to lasting impact.
Bill Gates famously declared, “most people overestimate what they can achieve in a year and underestimate what they can achieve in ten years.” Well, we renew our whole body in ten years, but imagine how much quicker we can renew our mind. Imagine, then, the radical transformation possible if we intentionally renew our mind and direct our thinking alongside long term goals. This is, in essence, what is meant by the entrepreneurial mindset.
Teaching this mindset this schools and then giving students the ability to test it in real time while building and growing a collaborative business is a gamechanger. There is truly no other experience like it and students who participate come out of it transformed—they have undergone “a complete change so that [they] are improved.” And this transformation will continue the rest of their lives.
The future of education is bright indeed!
